Safety Button
The Safety Button Club is a hands-on engineering and technology program where students design and build wearable or portable safety button prototypes to address real-world emergency needs. Ideal for those interested in coding, hardware, and social impact, participants work in interdisciplinary teams integrating software, embedded systems, and app development. The program emphasizes innovation, user-centered design, and practical skills like 3D printing, mirroring industry product development. Students gain experience in engineering, entrepreneurship, and creating technology that empowers and protects.

About This Program
Founded 2026. The Girls Safety Button Club is a project-based engineering and technology program where students design, build, and present a real-world safety solution—from concept to working prototype.
Students collaborate in interdisciplinary teams to create a wearable or portable safety button that can be activated in emergency situations. The project integrates hardware, software, and app development, with a strong emphasis on social impact, innovation, and user-centered design.
This club is ideal for students interested in coding, engineering, entrepreneurship, and creating technology that protects and empowers others.
What Students Will Build
By the end of the program, each team will develop a functional prototype that may include:
-
A physical safety button device (wearable or keychain-style)
-
Embedded hardware capable of detecting user activation
-
A connected mobile or web application
-
A basic alert system (location sharing or emergency notification logic)
-
A 3D-printed enclosure designed for practical real-world use
The project mirrors how real safety and IoT products are developed in industry.
Core Learning Areas
🔹 Coding & Software Development
-
Programming logic for button activation and alerts
-
App development fundamentals (front-end + introductory back-end concepts)
-
APIs and communication between device and app
🔹 Electrical & Computer Engineering
-
Introduction to microcontrollers and sensors
-
Circuit design, wiring, and power systems
-
Bluetooth / wireless communication basics
🔹 Hardware & 3D Printing
-
Rapid prototyping and iterative design
-
CAD modeling for enclosures
-
3D printing, testing, and refinement
🔹 Human-Centered & Social Impact Design
-
Designing for safety, privacy, and reliability
-

How Students Work
-
Team-based engineering sprints
-
Hands-on labs with mentorship
-
Design reviews and technical check-ins
-
Iterative testing, debugging, and improvement
-
Final prototype pitch and presentation
Students experience the full innovation cycle:
Problem → Design → Build → Test → Improve → Present
Who This Club Is For
This club is ideal for students interested in:
-
Coding and app development
-
Electrical Engineering (EE) and Computer Engineering (CE)
-
Hardware, IoT, and embedded systems
-
Social impact and safety technology
-
Entrepreneurship and pitch competitions
-
Hands-on, project-based learning
Prior experience is helpful but not required. Curiosity, commitment, and a willingness to build are most important.
Why This Club Stands Out
-
Solves a real-world problem, not a simulated exercise
-
Full-stack exposure: hardware + software + design
-
Emphasis on impact, ethics, and responsibility
-
Tangible outcomes students can showcase
-
Strong alignment with engineering, CS, and innovation pathways
Students leave with more than skills—they leave with a working solution and the confidence to build technology that matters.
Student Outcomes
-
A functional safety device prototype
-
Experience working in collaborative engineering teams
-
Technical documentation and design materials
-
A meaningful project for portfolios, competitions, or college applications
-
Presentation experience for the August 15th Pitch Event
